Stan’s Song
Jim Feldman, 2008
The Championship game over, in South Saint Paul
The boys took the field playing fastpitch softball,
A A7
In a year Stan hadn’t pitched much, just an inning or two
But at this final game, coach said “We’re counting on you”
B7 A7
Excitement and fear, but maybe the best day of his year
A7 B7
Excitement and fear, but maybe the best day of his year
He threw his mighty fastball, but they hit him real hard
The defense made the plays, they were flyin’ all over the yard
He got through three innings had a one zero lead
Then the coach said “Thank you Stan, you’ve given us all that we need”
Stan was confused, (no no) he didn’t know how he’d been used.
He was confused, he didn’t know that he’d been used.
The regular pitcher finished the game
He struck out every batter, the score stayed the same
They were champs, no one could deny
But the very next thing made that young boy wanna cry
A moment of joy, then one sad little boy
A moment of joy, (joy, joy, joy, joy) then one sad little boy
At the post game handshake Stan was the last kid in line
He heard every work as the other coach walked on by
That guy was Praising Stanley’s coach for a brilliant strategic move
By starting with the slow kid it ruined his hitters’ groove
Stan didn’t know, (no, no) that his fastball was slow
Stan didn’t know, (no, no, no, no) that his fastball was slow
Instrumental Verse
Now many years later Stan’s still coaching the game
Whenever he tells that story he still feels that pain
Did it make him a better pitcher, or a man, we’ll never know
But he’s helping young players now so they won’t pitch slow
‘Cause, he didn’t know, (no, no) that his fastball was slow
Yeah, he didn’t know, (no, no, no, no) that his fastball it was slow
